Project: Wild Kids WOOD

October 25, 2024

One day we realised that creating adventure kits was all very well, but what we really wanted was to be outside ourselves and to bring those adventure skills to life.  We wanted a ‘Wild Kids Wood’, where we could show kids what amazing fun can be had in the great outdoors.

So we decided to take on the regeneration of an ancient woodland with a vision to create a space where kids could enjoy a different type of adventure, and to learn some wild!

In 2023 we found a 30 acre plot of mixed woodland, set in Sussex between Gatwick and Brighton. It was a woodland in desperate need of a purpose and a plan.

Still suffering from the effects of the great storm of ’87, the woodland, now home to 100’s of deer and thousands of squirrels, looked set to become an overgrown wasteland, of reeds, bracken and Rhododendron. With a barren landscape littered with toppled Beech and Chestnut and some magnificent Ancient Oaks, in need of some love, our first mission had to be to restore some of the primitive woodland flora and fauna and rebuild the woodland.

So we got involved and what follows is an ongoing diary of the regrowth of Wild Kids Woods, where we hope to welcome you one day to enjoy the nature, learn something amazing or just get away from it all and breathe…
